1946 - 1969 ![]() Newspaper Story: PROVO -- The wreckage of a light plane which carried the pilot and three passengers to their deaths Friday night was being searched Saturday by Federal Aviation Agency investigators for clues to the cause of the crash. The plane crashed and exploded into flames in an alfalfa field northwest of Provo Airport. Victims in air mishap were: Dr. Dean Hyde, 51 Clovis Calif., the pilot; his son, Brent, 24, 844 E. 700 North, Provo; Brent's wife, Paula, 20, and Steven Larry Ward, 23, 68 N. 7th East, Provo, Mrs. Hyde's brother-in-law. The single-engine Beechcraft Bonanza crashed about eight minutes after take-off form Provo Airport at 10:05 p.m. Residents from several Provo neighborhoods reported the plane seemed to have had engine trouble. They told Provo Police Chief Jesse W. Evans the motor seemed to cut out, then would rev up "like a motorcycle without a muffler." Chief Evans said the plane was flying at low altitude and first struck a guy wife, then topped high trees before it tore through utility lines. Mr. Ward [was] a sophomore chemistry student. |
